What's this movie about? How pretty Brad Pitt is in relation to his brother? No? That's what I took from it.

I really love slow movies that just show us life. Beautiful landscapes and a soothing soundtrack are definitely bonuses and technically this movie has all of those things, but it kind of loses track of any story it has constantly. What happens to Paul is just something that's off the screen and it steals the emotional impact of his story. It was just a little bit too much of nothing to me. I felt like I was waiting for things to happen and the movie to give me something, but we never got there.

A clear passion project for Redford, and told in a way meant to imply import and meaning, but an oddly scrambled screenplay, with bits and pieces of a skimpy narrative thrown helter skelter, never merges into a coherent whole. It’s never really clear (or shown) why fly-fishing is the tie that binds; the climactic tragedy similarly seems to appear from nowhere and adds nothing to what has come before. A fine cast do their best, but struggle with characters who are largely bland ciphers,

I'm not opposed to a story with no real conflict, but I'd at least like something of interest to happen. The plot focuses on people who've done and experienced nothing at all remarkable, and any point the film hints a problem or conflict it's brushed over for more boring family interaction. A lot of people praise the cinematography, but I'd wager most think this because the camera showed pretty mountains. Most of the shots are pretty basic and uninteresting.

?? ?? on yrs old memory + trailer refresh | SO TOTALLY REDFORD for good or ill : It's a nostalgic, melodramatic, earnest, worthy, competently crafted, moral, postcard of a film. Its in love with USA wilds as used 2 be: Montana looks gorgeous as does Brad (as RR would've if he could've de-aged 35yrs & played role himself, as I'm sure he wanted to. - V handsome aged-out Ex-Star got similar type V handsome fill-in for himself). EXACTLY the film U'd expect RR 2 make in 1992

The poetry of the narrative, the illustrious scenery of the Montana woodlands and rivers, the magnificent soundtrack and the stunning cinematography are what make this movie successful. The plot doesn't fly above the water, however doesn't sink like a stone either. Good acting, fair script; all in all, a good movie.

Sentimental melodrama with almost the exact tone of the '70's TV series "Family"... I kept expecting Sada Thompson to show up. Worth watching for the gorgeous Montana scenery (only).

I am personally a fan of idyllic films, centered around immediate family and nature, yet this one didn't quite pull me in as much as the parts of its whole would've suggested. It felt a little drawn out, and seemed to cover an unnecessary amount of time in not enough detail. Still, a good watch with fantastic acting.

Tasteful to a fault, this period drama combines a talented cast (including a young Brad Pitt) with some stately, beautifully filmed work from director Robert Redford.

It's a strong story that's beautifully told ( some great performances) but it isn't that involving. However it's a beautiful story, you are not a moment absorbed by it.

Long, slightly boring, and too similar to Legends of the Fall for me to rate it higher.
But I do love Brad Pitt in this movie.

Enjoyable drama that draws upon the concept of "the good old days." Brad Pitt is very good and though the script it a bit weak in a few areas overall it's very good and avoids many cliches of the genre.

A bit dry, and a role that very nearly typecast Brad Pitt-he'd come back to play essentially the same character in Legends of the Fall, but a decently well done movie, with plenty of gorgeous shots.

Probably the best film of the much missed River Pheonix. Funny and touching without descending into sentimentalism.

A muted flashback by the oldest son who is trying to remember all the good things about growing up but cannnot help recalling the, apparently unpreventable, tragedy that tore his family apart. Good dialog and acting by the excellent cast and good direction by Robert Redford.
