Other of Green's films have been elevated significantly by the quality of only a few scenes. This is no different, but their impact was not so great. This film feels markedly more resigned to the author's conventions, and is not as fresh as earlier works. I hope he doesn't get too comfortable. In one notable scene, Green himself busts out some serious moves on the D-floor, which I might have to put into action at the next gig.

For better or worse, this is as close as Green has gotten to typical post-Bressonian 'contemplative cinema' (superficially at least, to the uninitiated this could at times almost pass for Pedro Costa or something, and not just because of the Lisbon setting) although he's still ultimately far too unique and idiosyncratic to be mistaken for anyone but himself. Like Carlos Reygadas, Green does seem to get a bit more self-important with each film, although he's ultimately the greater talent.
