Slow-burn build up ultimately reveals a quietly powerful and searing drama with a few forgivably broad cathartic moments (anything involving the Whitford character). Costner's magnificently serene, laid-back performance (clearly modeled on his director) may be the best he's ever done, with Eastwood matching him step for step. Pulls a fierce bait-and-switch in the early stages when the film appears to endorse Costner's behavior, only to reveal it as a set-up for a moving and haunting climax.

people aren't inherently "good" or "bad". they're going down a road with the hand they're dealt, longing for whatever utopia they've been sold and doing what they think is necessary to get there. and in a perfect world, there'd be no conflict in that. they would just...get there. but well, at least there's kinship along the way, one of the few things making the trip worthwhile anyway. beautiful movie.

This is a special movie, one of Eastwood's most underrated. It's to crime films what Unforgiven was to westerns before it: it ignores conventions and contains enough subtle detail in each scene which some of its peers lack in their entire running times. It's not perfect but it contains a remarkable power (especially in the scenes between Costner and the boy) that you'd have trouble finding elsewhere.

Tearjerker aspect of this film got most (as it does in the recent stuff of Clint). decently shot and acted, underneath the shell, it is as shallow as a baloon.

I don't know exactly what I was supposed to take away from this but the characters were definitely well thought out.

This movie has it all; tater tots, stolen Casper Halloween costumes, RC cola, and Kevin Costner assuring a nine year old that the lad is well hung for his age. There are so many missteps and unintentionally laughable moments. The entire Eastwood/Dern passively chasing Costner idea is poorly executed. In fact, no one in this movie has any sense of urgency. I'm sure there is something more at play with that idea, but I don't care to dwell on it.

Three generations of troubled males try to work it out. Corny and implausible, but the director makes good use of the charms of his three stars (Kevin Costner, Laura Dern and himself), with characters and situations that are a little more emotionally and morally complicated than most films about cops and criminals, and fathers and sons.

Somehow a kidnapped boy bonds with his kidnapper over a period of a couple days. Also, a bit of killing for some reason, but don't worry, neither the boy or dog die.

Complexities of manking in a violent world. I love how this manages to be as sweet as rude -- think about the set-up at the family house, dancing before near mass killing. Bandit who got imprisoned by the Ranger who's hunting him connects with a Jeovah Witness' kid who also doesn't have a proper childhood. So, the car turns into a time machine. Enjoy the present. And, mom, please, promise your son trick or treat and rollercoaster. When we don't have a father, a criminal will get the job done.

A low key, relatively unassuming drama about an unlikely friendship that forms under extreme circumstances, A Perfect World features Costner's best performance as Butch, a career criminal who isn't a bad man but nonetheless does bad things. He kidnaps a little boy raised by his strict Mormon mother and acts like a surrogate father while being pursued across the country by Eastwood. It's a funny, sad and thoughtful film about what violence and parental neglect does to boys and men.

Disturbing and surprising in such unpredictably human ways, this bringing together of two generations of leading icons of strong, silent American leading men finds Eastwood at his most existential and profound by this point in his directing career, a haunting and melancholic road movie, naturalistic and deliberately paced and all the more effective for flying in the face of current conventions.

Eastwood deals with fatherhood with his usual old school liberal touch. Sixties Texas is beautifully recreated, and Costner is very good. Understated and moving.

Again! the only character I was really rooting for was the "bad guy" who went to jail for defending his mother. No surprise but he doesn't make it just like all the other films.

"After their success' with The Bodyguard and Unforgiven, it was confusing as to why Costner and Eastwood respectively would choose such an off-beat film as their follow-up. Although the acting is of a high calibre as expected, the story disappoints with little character development or action."

This is a movie that is enjoyable to watch. It stars Kevin Costner who I think catches too much crap about his acting. Clint Eastwood I believe directed this, so you know it is well done.
