It’s pretty gay and I’m not being snarky and calling it dumb. It’s GAY. Lounging here on my plush bean bag ballsac chair being fanned with dildos by slicked up oiled up muscle men wearing dental floss. There’s a copy of Freddy’s Revenge on the credenza ... it’s the gayest thing in the room. “My, God - It is hot like an oven in here.”

Seeing this now stirred up a memory of watching it at a friend's house one night when I was 8 or so. I remember being upset about his mom fast forwarding through the part where the main characters start getting it on. Well it's 16 years later and I've finally seen it, so all you did was delay the inevitable lady. BOOYAH, in your FACE!

Props to the film-makers for attempting to take Freddy in a new direction, but its violation of the ground rules of Freddy as a nightmare-specific demon oddly reduces his ability to scare, not helped by Englund's tired performance this time round. Supposed homoerotic subtext adds a little extra interest, but the inclusion of an effectively slimy Bell raises questions the movie is not really willing to address. Not quite a noble failure, but not without some interest.

The follow-up to the slasher hit "A Nightmare on Elm Street"(1984) saw the villainous "Freddy Krueger" take his revenge out on the audiences who paid to see this terrible sequel. This messy possession plot mixed with historic levels of homoerotic subtext goes off the rails in the end when the movie goes all "Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday"(1993), on what we thought we understood about the Freddy mythology, by bringing a magical Freddy/Jesse into the real world to crash a pool party.

While still featuring tip top gore, effects, and cool kills, the second installment is far worse than the original, and even the third. Also, I'm not sure that the thematic message even holds water, it's almost like they're trying to tell us that being gay turns you into a serial killer, though in context of the 80's that's not far fetched to think.

Fine. I'll be That Guy: when taken on its own terms, this is a better-than-average scarefest. It has more in common with Jacob's Ladder or Angel Heart than the ANOES series, and in a way creates a Lovecraft-ian descent into personal madness and fear - which pushes Freddy to the background. And while I completely understand that to be a major flaw with fans, it really works when considered as a standalone or spinoff title. That it even has a subtext (surprisngly gay!) gives it more points for me.

Gaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyy Seriously, the only thing that could possibly be gayer than this is straight up gay porn. It's also pretty dull, lacking the oneiric atmosphere or the inventive effects of the first one, and it basically ignores any and all rules the original established for how Freddy 'works'

There are parts here that feel unusual for the genre even though it's mostly just a result of bad ideas strung together in unsatisfying/unintentionally laughable ways. In addition to some awful ideas for scares (non-mechanical gym equipment & a single canary), there's a couple of dopey attempts at humor, & most oddly, a pronounced but perhaps unintentional homophobic subtext. It would've also been good if the film's big variation was explained. Why would Freddy want to kill in the real world?

For me, this is a massive improvement on the original, and I'll explain why: the original, for all its conceptual ingenuity, felt like it was directed by me in high school. The film is strikingly amateurish. Freddy's Revenge has some studio money behind it and feels like it. This film is bonkers. It makes no sense. And it's a goddamn delight. Exploding hotdogs? I mean, come on.

Thanks to its reorientation as a camp classic of gay cinema, Freddy's Revenge has yielded incredible dividends as a hilarious romp through the horror of repressed teenage homosexuality in an era of queerness ravaged by AIDS and governmental oppression. Additionally, the messy history around the film's homoerotics has only added to its magnetism as a cult cultural object for analysis. This film is truly a masterpiece of horror in its own right, proving horror's potential as political mediation.

This is a bad film, but as a gay text (notice how I didn't say subtext? This film is about as subtle as Liberace), it's magnificent. I am not sure why they decided to follow up a hugely successful horror film with this, but I am glad they did, because it's a great watch.

(2016 Freddython #2:) Immediately a lazier and poorer film than the original with much weaker characters and dreams and kill sequences. It just kinds of coasts on the appeal of Freddy and little else. I didn't even really think about this until I'd watched more movies, but it really is wrong that Freddy just flat-out crosses over into the real world and starts killing. Also, hey, Kim Myers, Meryl Streep called she wants her face back.

An egregious step-down in quality from the first, bordering on so-bad-it's-good territory. It breaks all the rules laid down in the original and turns Freddy into an omnipotent superbeing who can do whatever the plot requires him to do. The only reason to watch it is the sheer amount of homoeroticism in the screenplay that was apparently missed by everyone bar the writer. And exploding death parrots. 25 points of this score is purely because of exploding death parrots.

The homoerotic subtext is laughably awkward but mostly forgettable (except for the strange, Crusing-like club scene, what the hell?). What's really the problem here is that the film doesn't play by the rules: Freddy in the first film could only hurt you in your dreams, but here he's a magical genie-like figure who can start fires and easily wreak havoc in the real world. It consequently takes away all the suspense and makes Freddie incredibly generic and uninteresting.

I think it’s fair to say it pales in comparison to the original, but Freddy’s Revenge still has it’s moments of genuine terror. Even though for the most part it doesn’t hit the highs of it’s opening sequence, I think for it’s time, it does get pretty ballsy with some of it’s subtle, but effective subtext. There is a lot more going on this time around with the characters themselves, and that helps a film that overall feels lighter than the original on the scare factor.

I avoided this for years and was unaware there were undertones of repressed sexuality, so boy was I in for a surprise! The undertones are most interesting part of the movie, for better or worse. I liked the intro and make-up and effects, but otherwise, this was poorly scripted with mostly wooden acting, with a title and logic that make no sense at all. Totally worth watching for its unintentional hilarity alone, but it's a very underwhelming sequel. "Help yourself, f*cker!"

While not as good as the original, Freddy's Revenge is at times good. I think this movie being the only one in the series to have Freddy kill people outside of their dreams was a mistake. I think that having him choose Mark Patton's character to bring him back through fear was a good plot choice. The acting in this movie is well done. About halfway through the movie I thought to myself, "Wow! There are a lot of homoerotic undertones in this film." It is cool that they did that at that time.

Not particularly scary, but Sholder has a good eye for practical effects - Freddy bursting out of the protagonist's belly is really awesome to represent how much he is influencing and possessing him --, not so much to plot development -- Jesse is a closeted teenage struggling with supernatural stuff and his feelings for his best friend, and she eventually goes to the boiling room to try to save him. A mix of ridiculous (bird attack) and nice stuff (pool party attack, opening scenes, final bus).

As a standalone, outside of the larger Nightmare on Elm Street "mythos", Freddy's Revenge is a successful story about the horror of growing up. I like this entry because it isn't like the rest of the sequels--it's about more than just a dream boogeyman. To criticise it for not sticking to what became a tired and empty formula is to complain that a restaurant didn't make the fast food slop you expected and instead tried something new. It's not without big faults but it's among the better entries.

I've always appreciated these movies more for their nightmare imagery and logic than for Freddy himself, and this is just the weirdest, most autonomous entry - less a narrative than a teenager rebelling against himself, so disjointed that nothing can be taken at face value. It feels like second-rate DePalma or Lynch, and that counts for something.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy's Revenge is a disappointing follow-up to what was one of the best slasher movies to ever be released. This one shot itself in the foot from the get-go by neglecting to use the potential left for it with the original's premise, instead taking Freddy in a different direction which limits creativity. As a result, the film is less interesting and less intellectually stimulating. It also isn't scary and provides little in the way of suspense.

The Second Nightmare on Elm Street entry feels like it's trying to say something. Maybe it's the sadomasochist imagery, the gay panic, Freddy inside the protagonist whose actor calls himself the first male scream queen... Okay, it isn't subtle to anyone except the director. All new characters means Freddy has to be reestablished, thus the slow start, his M.O. is inexplicably altered (Jesse's pointless recruitment, restraint in his kills) and the resolution is brought about by literally reading the first film's ending. Still, some of the changes add to the suspense, the transformation effects are pretty rad, the two lead roles hold their own and bring different dynamics to the table, and the subtle themes of sexual angst and repressed homoeroticism are intriguing.

On the plus side, it's admirable that this film doesn't try to just rehash the plot of "A Nightmare on Elm Street" with a new set of characters. On the down side, it doesn't seem to take place in the same world, and doesn't manage to reproduce much of anything that was appealing about the original film. Patton really does not make a likeable or sympathetic lead, and Freddy's motives and abilities feel completely separate from the rest of the series.

This kind of misses what made the first A Nightmare on Elm Street so good, but I suppose its extremely obvious subtext about closeted sexual confusion is its own form of "real world meets dream world" anxiety and horror. A Daydream on Elm Street. This was too light and fluffy for me. It didn't have any of the punch of scariness that the first film had. Mr. Krueger was almost more comedic than the terrorizer of your dreams that he should be. Freddy's Revenge is the series' black sheep, being very different from the other movies in many ways. It is lacking in good nightmare sequences, and that's ultimately what causes it to fail. Having Freddy simply pop up in the real world is a bit jarring, as the point of him was to kill people in their most vulnerable state: in their sleep. The ending is also unintentionally corny. The movie's attempt to be different does spark some creativity, but overall, it's a big step down from the original,

Under appreciated due to its logic that messed up the timeline and tried to cut Freddy away from his dreamlike abilities, one of its main flaws is highlighted by this by being coherently given a standalone status. The writer snuck some pretty blatant homosexual subtext into his script, and no one noticed. Did the director not even read the script? The subtext turns out to be the best part of the film, because it gets the most laughs. Not scary, unless you count how scarily boring it is.

The one where Freddy is defeated by True Love's Kiss. I'll always hold a special place in my heart for this one because it's the one I caught the most on UPN back in the day. Plus, Freddy fucking up a randy teen pool party? Fire and brimstone and popping hot dogs hell yeah.

Mediocre. Nothing new here, however praise is due for the stunning high-tech dream sequence.

Oy, this film used something different about Freddy than the first one, and it ended up being a confusing, anti-good, and not so haunting flop.

very different than the original and not well liked among fans, it's grown on me and i think it's alright and it's the last time Freddy is as dark as he is before he started to crack some jokes in the following sequels

after they made this movie they decided to take the series in another direction and disregard this film from the storyline, but on it's own still a pretty good freddy movie

A very good sequel and it's a little bit more scary than the first one. I rank this better than the other sequels of Nightmare on Elm Street 'cause of the story that brings things very different way. Then the movie just haves that rough attitude that most of the movies of today lacks most. Freddy seems to be more sadistic than in other Nightmare movies and that's always a good way to start.

Not the worst Freddy outing, but far from the best.

fred krueger as a metaphor for repressed homosexuality... it's certainly unique, though it has very little to do with the mythology of the series. the main problem, other than the iffy logic, is the awful lead. other than that it's sort of an interesting examination of high school sexual insecurities with some decent atmosphere. but patton is just so awful.
