Godard's pathetic attempt at penning a compelling female character not played by Anna Karina

30 dias de JLG - Filme #13: Une femme mariée. Gosto de como o Godard uma crítica à burguesia quase no mesmo patamar de um Eça de Queiroz com Primo Basílio, mas também é bem doído ver que ele não foi ácido o suficiente. BlurayRip no MakingOff.

I feel like current cinema is all footnotes to Godard. But mainly, people just snatch stuff from him. And here it's very clear why. Also - unusually good balance between trolling, intelectual statements and gut feelings.

the negative scene at the hotel is so ballsy for its time. the shots of arms and hands caressing each other on the white linen is total unnerved serenity.

A gorgeous film. That negative photography sequence should be one of the most famous Godard moments. So surreal. It probably would've been even better with Anna Karina (certainly more people would remember it) but it's worth a watch nonetheless.

I didn't quite finish this, but I saw enough of it. I love philosophizing in films, but they should be at least tangentially related to what the characters are going through. Or rather, if they're unrelated, they aught to be interesting. Neither was the case, here. I'm sorry to rag on this film, but I don't really appreciate mosaics. If there isn't a character or a plot that I can grab onto, and there wasn't here, there really should be a strong theme. There really wasn't, which is too bad.

Contains some very fine and very interesting moments, both intimate and philosophical, but the (deliberate) amorphousness prevents this from being able to sustain the viewer's engagement as thoroughly as in the director's best work.

A rousing study of flesh and emotion, this is one Godard's most visually striking films. It's beautiful all the way through and still has those quirky Nouvelle Vogue touches that I love so much.

Noir & Blanc... the divide between ideas and people - a divide that the protagonist (a married woman) seems to treat with the stark contrast of black and white. The editing felt a lot like the fashion magazines that became part of its focus - segmented, sensual and flat. It's an interesting film, but quite fragmented and the devices used are pretty transparent and not entirely satisfying.

Sitting comfortably alongside "Une femme est une femme" and "Vivre sa vie", "Une femme mariée" is further proof that Godard could do no wrong in the 60s. Insightful commentary on men and women, marriage and other social constructions, poetic moments and meticulous cinematography with an impressive range of deep black and pale white tones (thanks to photographer Raoul Coutard) make this an absolute must for Godardites. Eureka's Masters of Cinema blu-ray is a joy to watch.

The trailer Godard made for this might be even better.

A more poetic, romantic (?), "sensualist" Godard would probably make the greatest film ever (though is that not what WKW sort of is already?). Sadly, this is not quite that film, but moments do come closer to outright brilliance than any other Godard i've seen. Cut out the long-winded pontificating and you'd have a masterpiece on your hands...
