A Man Called Horse

I'm sure this was kind of mindblowing in the 1970's but after Dances with Wolves, Last Samurai, etc. this doesn't appeal to me as it's the same story. Shame because the poster where he's suspended in front of an orange sun is a great one (and that scene is the only memorable one).

(100 Westerns Project #3:) Sort of like a poor man's The Last Samurai, I guess - dude in the 1800s gets captured by an exotic tribe of warriors, befriends his captors, takes on their culture, then eventually fights alongside them. That part is all well and engaging, though the fact that we never hear a word of understandable (or even subtitled) dialogue from most of the film's characters keeps us at a pretty major emotional distance. The gory ritual scene is definitely cool though.

for some reason I kept imagining Dr. Graham Chapman as the main character through the whole movie. the idea of a native american warrior tribe needing a white dude to lead them in battle and tell them when to throw arrows is pretty funny

I remember this had a big impact on me as a teenager. I liked it quite well. I suppose I should watch it again and rate again. Horse's assent to manhood among the tribe was quite memorable.

The contrast is played off nicely, with some disturbing scenes mixed in. Harris is very good.

A movie that I had to watch mith my older brothers when I was a kid. I loved it, too, unfortunately it's been a long time since I saw it the last time.
