The script might be a decent one, a few bad moments and the general datedness aside, but as much as I like both Guiness and Russell they are very much miscast in these roles and it hampers the film terribly. It's not just that they are playing stereotypes, Russell needs a much livelier script to play to her comedic strengths and Guinness needs more to do. It's not at all a bad movie despite its problems and the bloated runtime, but it requires too much forgiveness to really enjoy.

Interminable stage-bound comedy-drama, boringly assembled and fatally compromised by the casting of stars who are neither Jewish nor Japanese.

Alec Guinness as a Japanese. GACK. Hollywood preachment movies don't digest well as it is, but that piece of casting -- possibly the worst racial impersonation ever -- is enough to kill it stone dead
