A Hero Ain't Nothin' But a Sandwich

Credit to Nelson for keeping out the Krameresque--the sharpest barbs are for well-meaning whites & their institutions--and allowing Childress to adapt her story her way. It's overstuffed and didactic, but almost thrillingly so, like vibrant YA Odets, and even the cartoonish aspects have their own odd menace (Kevin Hooks' chickenhawkish Fagin of a heroin dealer). Winfield is Winfield (the greatest) and Scott...well, jodamico's "show-stoppingly incredible" about covers it. t5 teen perf belieeeeeve

A nice naturalist feel at times. Paul Winfield is terrific and Larry B. Scott is show-stoppingly incredible. It's along the lines of The Education of Sonny Carson, albeit not quite as good.
