Far more artful and witty than any boy band film should probably be, but of course the Beatles aren't just any boy band. The mischievous, anti-establishment antics and music videos are surprisingly timeless for being so iconic, and it's hard to imagine such a film being made today even if there were a modern analogue to the Beatles. The film has all the pep and commercial value of their early music with little hint of what they would become, but the spirit is infectious.

If you love The Beatles you will probably like this. If you like them, but find them overrated like I do you'll probably notice that they are poor actors and the plot, based around their "day to day" life of making fun of Ringo and being exasperating to adults, is weak. You'll also think watching teenage girls lose their shit over pop songs about holding hands and love. It's not for me, but many people really like this film. I would have preferred to watch a documentary about actual beetles.

I'm not usually a fan of this sort of movie, but it is actually really well made. All four members of the Beatles were so natural, and the fantastic direction from Lester really made this film what it is today, There are some moments where you feel lost, but you remember not to care because, well, its the Beatles. There are some extremely hilarious moments in this and of course, the great soundtrack. Good film, but maybe only for Beatles fans.

This film is pure concentrated joy, especially of the "yay! let's just do whatever we want!" variety. Until this point, rock & roll musicians in film did one of two things. They showed up for just long enough to play a song and buggered off, or they were the lead in a conventional flick that let them sing a few songs along the way (in other words, Elvis). This film takes the novel approach of just letting the band be themselves on film because presumably people wanted to see it to see them.

More interesting as an historical document and record of the phenomenon of Beatlemania than it is an actually good movie, it's still pretty likeable, as they're obviously having fun. I'm not really the target audience here. I think the Beatles are pretty good, but have never really understood the fuss about them, but I'd imagine this would be more interesting to their many many fans. The reactions of girls freaking out seeing them can only be compared to slasher movie heroines.

An exercise in image mainly aiming for charm, and succeeding well enough. Our subjects acquit themselves with decent cheek for a bunch of musicians in the middle of a meandering, pattering comedy. But if we're to be honest, the main thing that keeps this from dragging is the abundance of song sequences. If beat-music period Beatles music or New Wave camera work hold any sort of appeal for you at all, then rest assured that this delivers a grand abundance of fine examples of both.

Only need to be watched by the most ardent of Beatles fans. Wooden acting, a non-sensical plot with irrelevant sequences thrown in make this an affront to the film it was shot on. Paul and Ringo do throw off some charm in their delivery but everything else is so forced and WINK-WINK it is laughable. A scene where George is mistaken for a dumb youth by a know-it-all advertiser is cute. The music slaps though; the mini-concert at the end is the highlight of the film.

The best parts by far are those in which the Fab Four are let loose - their mischievousness is endearing - which does not happen enough (the filler is often a bit of a drag). The opening scene, with George and Ringo falling over, is a highlight. The music, obviously, is fabulous. Peter Watkins definitely saw this before making 'Privilege' (recognising, of course, that he was referencing the popular music movement of the 1960s more generally).

Rewatched. I like this more each time I see it. Mostly for Wilfrid Brambell's anarchic turn as Paul's grandfather - a one-of-a-kind comic performance in itself but also an ingeniously surreal element that fits seamlessly (in a teenybopper film no less) as a tip of the hat to older generations. The small stage working-class scene also appeals. And Pattie Boyd and Margaret Nolan in the same film is pretty amazing. Arguably, The Beatles are the least interesting part of the movie.

A giant music video held together by some thin strands of plot. I could see the edginess of it, but after a while, it felt like a sugar rush, watching the boys run around here and there. The music was, of course, fantastic; wish they weren't lip-syncing. Since Beatlemania was over before my time, it's neat to see this time capsule, but the older I get, the more I think they all needed haircuts.

I sadly found the Beatles to be closer to annoying children than the charismatic fun guys most people seemed to see in this film. It has its amusing moments and I like how it looked, but the plot didn't go anywhere and without finding it fun and playful there isn't much left. It doesn't help that for me, their music isn't too special until at least Rubber Soul. If I had my way, there would be a film based on Meet the Residents instead.

It may have impressed teenage girls in 1964 but it didn't really impress me in 2017. Not because the movie looks dated, just because it doesn't do much but fall into an uneasy territory between documentary and fiction. The Beatles play themselves, and take part in these made up scenarios with actors. Paul tries to keep his uncle out of trouble. George gets offered a modelling job. Ringo goes AWOL. It's all so light and inconsequential... at least they played some hits for the soundtrack though.

This isn't really what you'd call a great film, but it does encapsulate the '60s and The Beatles in some way. It just says a lot about how huge the band was that a film like this got made. Even though I've heard the songs hundreds of times, I still felt swept up in it all. So, yeah, it's not some huge artistic achievement, but it is a significant historical artifact, in a way.

An engaging series of cheap thrills. It's just so much fun to see The Beatles (none are great actors but they get by on the seemingly inborn deadpan abilities of the British) put one over on all the stuffed shirts who want a piece of them, again and again and again. It's obviously artificial, yet refreshing. Lester et al.'s scrappy, spontaneous, New-Wavey approach adds a lot. The music obviously is great; I'd forgotten how pretty "And I Love Her" is.

Made when the band were making their crappiest and sappiest music, so most of the songs in this suck. Along with that is the paper-thin story that makes The Beatles out to be total inconsiderate assholes who get away with it because they're famous. A lot of the humour also falls flat on its face, with most of the laughs I got out of this being unintentional. The only thing I liked about this (apart from the cinematography) was how up-front it dealt with Ringo's slight ostracization.

I don't really care much about The Beatles, i mostly just watched it because it's one of Hal Hartley's favorites and, he claims, biggest influences. Which i can sort of see from the surprisingly snappy and droll, ironic screwball-like dialogue and faux-Nouvelle Vague cinematography. That said, some of the humor is very silly and dumb (everything with the grandpa is pretty terrible), and cinematically there's nothing here Godard wasn't doing better at the time.

In the terrible history of the movie exploitation of young singing sensations, there is no pity and little joy. Consider, foi instance, the astonishing vitality of one Elvis Presley and the malignant spirit that insisted on his films being so bland, so enrvated, so absent of all the things that made Elvis remarkable and dangerous and sexy. Richar Lester received proper praise for finding a movie form that was wildly flattering to the Fab Four, generally smart and hip with film's possibilities.

I don't think people realize how influential this film really was...It virtually gave birth to the contemporary form of 'MTV-style' editing we've been so accustomed to, becoming not only one of the very first 'music videos', but mockmentaries, too. A lot of things with this movie. I guess Richard Lester or the editor or someone doesn't know how drums work, because sometimes they lined up and sometimes they didn't. Same with guitars sometimes, although that wasn't as bad. It's kind of tough to rip on the movie too much, because it's so experimental. But it's not that well acted, and it's not that funny, and the musical sequences were annoying for the syncing reasons. But the movie is an enjoyable trip to take, so I liked it somehow.

A giddy film filled that also serves as a vibrant slice of cultural history. Lester captures The Beatles' energy and ingenuity in beautiful black-and-white. The plot's thinner than a guitar string, all the better to showcase the bliss of making brilliant music, flirting with lovely birds and escaping those grumpy authority figures at every opportunity. It's happy and shrewd, coming as close as any film conceivably could to capturing just why these lads inspired people to scream with joy.
