A Guy Named Joe

Just found out this was the movie Spielberg remade when he made "Always" (a movie I love). Great love story and drama, with some smart comedic lines. Also, had a treasure trove of well-known actors of the day.

A little too much on the romantic side of death, but if anyone has the personality to give death life, it's Spencer Tracy. In many ways he dampens the fear of dying. It's most comforting. Sure, there is the longing of losing someone, but the story gives relevance to move on and accept the end not the worst thing to happen to a good fellow. A mentality very related to the war they were in. Not a life changing movie, but perhaps a death changing one.

A Guy Named Joe is still a pathos-filled tale that appeals to the heightened emotions of the audience, but done with a great deal of industry talent, and an abstract sense of wonder and novelty as a classic American studio picture. It makes me think of a strip of celluloid whirring from one reel to another between my fingertips.

the special effects, though obviously fake, are effective. the general plot is somewhat cheesy, but it's interesting and entertaining. moreover this is actually a pretty tightly made and well constructed movie for the 40's, although there have been better.

Can't say I loved this or its remake.
