I believe this film deserves a lot more credit than it has gotten. The acting isn't my favorite the entire time, but the film builds an insurmountable amount of dread in the first two thirds, and follows it up with some twisted visuals at the end. While the ambiguity is enticing and perhaps more haunting, I appreciate that this film went for it with the campy ending, thereby feeling less conventional than what's left unsaid. I'd argue that the masterful restraint here is akin to The Witch.

Missed 15 points by not having "Blood Sugar Sex Magik" by Red Hot Chili Peppers in the trailer. The ending is fine if you have a medium-to-high non-sequitur tolerance. It's a pretty great movie that ignores audience expectations, which I don't mind, but y'all seem to be crying about it. It's this decade's Stage Fright. I mean the Hitchcock one, not Aquarius.

An ultra-realistic portrayal of the myriad steps actually required to do some down-home daemon summonin'. As someone who believes the best fantasy is steeped in reality, this movie was like an earl grey teabag that had I'd forgotten about in my cup since last week. A Dark Song most definitely won't frighten, but it scratched an itch that most conventional horror flicks cannot...and gave me insight into how long I must abstain from sex before commencing my next ritual (done and done).

This is a film that starts out promising with a woman who is looking to perform a forbidden ritual to contact the nether realm . She contacts an obnoxious ginger sperg who moonlights as an occult wizard. The first two thirds of the movie is full of suspense while they perform this grueling ritual. Things go off the rails but sadly the film decides to go in the direction of cheesy sentimentality. Goofy video game CGI is also never a good idea in a "serious" horror film.

The ending gets a bit naff, but up until then this is stunning: Simple, tense, with a script that skips like a stone on the surface of a well thought-out mythology and two people circling each other on their way down. If this had had the guts to go full dark, it would have been an instant classic.

It was awesome as long as it remained ambiguous, and i really would've liked it to break new ground in an exhausted genre. But somewhere in the final act someone dropped the shenanigans and went full throttle in the wrong direction. Well...meh.

Loved loved loved this movie but hated hated hated the ending. Snip the last five minutes and you're onto a gem. Thoroughly enjoyed the rest. Highly recommend for fans of an atmospheric, old school occult horror.

After reading some reviews it seems that one needs to be an occultist aficionado to enjoy this flick. For me it was mostly boring with poor acting.

Now that's how you make a good horror movie. It starts off immediately, no bullshit of introduction scenes, no stupid characters. It had very little cliches if any. I'd have given this a 100 if not for the corny ass ending. Anyone who uses CGI in such movies with a serious tone should be sentenced to prison for life and forced to watch cheesy cgi monsters 24/7.

Hermetic man tries to guide dumb cunt through a great ordeal of an Effect. -1 for rushed ending. -1 for lack of rules towards the end.

I would say it's really the type of horror I like. The tension is unnerving and based on small, subtle events that create the crawling mood of terror. This kind of thing works way better than me than the cheap jump scares, but the way the story ended felt a little bit too cheap, as if it had been ripped off a Hallmark movie. Still, worth a watch if you're in for some tension building up slowly.

Original and not 100% predictable, which by today horror standards is saying *a lot*.

Visually and aurally, it's excellent. The idea to make the entire movie about a single magic ritual, with an emphasis on the procedural nature of the rite is excellent - the world needs more occultism movies. The script, ending excepted, is adequate if a bit unfocused. All that being said, the end handles being the millionth 'mother coping with the loss of her child' movie and the billionth 'forgiveness is better than vengeance' movie about as well as a made-for-TV Lifetime channel soap opera.

Original in an already treated subgenre but the fact that the Horror part is its last make me downvoted a little.

Hey look another low budget film about a grieving mother trying to come to terms with the death of a child. If you've seen 10 you've seen them all

A brooding procedural regarding rituals, which is something that I didn't think I needed. For two thirds of the film, it is pretty great. The final act goes for broke and doesn't quite stick the landing, but the film is still quite impactful.

Two characters, one house, and a concentration of downright evil mood. It does, unfortunately, relent this wicked disposition in the last few moments, but it's a small disappointment. I have much appreciation for these tasteful terror tactics; every time the set up seems ripe for an obnoxious blast to the senses, it instead leaves the viewer hanging on dissonant notes of dread and discomfort.

This film is a kind of St. Jude. Both the subject matter and the film itself are abstruse and impenetrable. Its dogged torturous commitment to authenticity means that it alienates the dabblers and the casuals. This is the only well-acted movie about the occult that doesn't take any liberties, that sticks to the source materials, and does not burnish the rough patches for the sake of aesthetics or viewer preferences. (Yes, even the ending!) Groundbreaking moviemaking that never falters.
