Strong visuals, nice sets and decent buildup had me interested, the unsubtle foreshadowing and predictable progression had me worried. I couldn't shake the feeling I was watching a watered-down Shutter Island, complete with DeHaan as Budget DiCaprio. I was hoping SO HARD for this to take a Society-like turn in the climax but the movie just gave me a steaming heap of bullshit instead. Damnit!

Slowly dials up the creepy factor to a six out of ten and leaves it there until a burn victim attempts to impregnate his daughter--I'm not exactly sure where the dial was set to for that scene. Could have been a little bit shorter, but it was fairly effective and kept me guessing, and had a very Lovecraftian feel going on. Also, DeHaan did a pretty good job with his character.

A Cure for Wellness is one script touch up and 30 minutes of trimming away from being a great movie. As it is, it's a somewhat ambitious film that can't get its mystery to work and can't maintain the thrills for its overlong running time. It's got great production design, it's wonderfully filmed, and it even does a good job generating a strong atmosphere. It's got a silly plot and an even more ridiculous ending. It's not good, but there are far worse things out there. At least it has ambition.

The Hollywood version of one of those 60's avant-garde flicks where as soon as something starts to make sense, the director pivots faster than a politician before a midterm. Likewise, it also lies to the audience constantly, which is not the same thing as narrative misdirection. After a while, no matter how showy it is, the audience starts to feel cheated, and you stop caring. Incestuous Reptilian rape becomes one of its lesser offenses. Oh I'm sorry, I started talking politics!

I like to picture the producers on set saying, "You know you've been shooting for five months, Mr. Verbinski. How long is this picture going to be?" "Well, I'm not cutting out the incest!" "Oh, no no no no. We're not suggesting that! Of course we keep the incest. Okay, well, carry on!"

Made the mistake of watching this right after watching Shutter Island, now I can't remember which movie is which, and am having an extremely difficult time writing this review. Typical "is he sane and everyone else is crazy, or is he crazy and everyone else is sane" story line, but with more parasite eels and wholesome child marriage.

I can't talk for everyone, but personally, if I was being send to some remote part of the alps to retrieve my boss, who's gone AWOL on a fancy spa resort, and found the place to be "The red flag castle of foreshadowing" - eerily similar to a derelict Soviet era asylum, I might have been a bit more hesitant to indulge in the local mad scientist's wellness program.

Has a strong whiff of writing cheques it can't cash, but with a slim chance it contains a genuine puzzle beyond the ostensible narrative it so overtly telegraphs. If so, my money's on the key moment being the ironic contrast between the voiceover about humans being the only species capable of self-reflection and the image of a goldfish seemingly observing its reflection, Narcissus-style, unto death: perhaps centuries-old eels become omnipotent geniuses. Seems clearly written for Leo Di Caprio.

I want to say that this movie punched me right in the eels, but a) I'm not sure the kids are saying that anymore, and b) I'm not sure exactly what I'd be trying to say. Much like this movie, but at least I don't take 2 1/2 hours to say it.

Beautifully designed overblown gothic horror. Not a film about unease of contemporary society -- like Haneke (lol) would do --, but a tale of a perverted dude so obsessed with purity that he dries old people to feed his daughter with magic drops in order to later have a baby with her. A tooth is pulled in close-up, leeches surrounds a girl on her period and invades throats, the doc is a swamp beast, conspiracy is pure neo-Nazi shit. Lots of boring stuff too, but the weird bits make me feel WELL.

Most people I know fall on one side or the other on this movie, and I must say I am on the side that liked it immensely. An obvious reference to Lovecraft, the atmosphere is perfect and is accompanied by a haunting score and beautiful visuals. The acting is good, though I found Dane DeHaan's role a little out of his range. Overall, an awesome film brought down only slightly by some poor writing and an actor out of his league.

Went to see this movie with my girl in hopes of casually making out throughout the film and losing my cinema-kiss virginity. This expectation got completely shattered during the commercials when this weird looking guy sat right next to me (who doesn't keep a goddamn empty seat in-between?) and some guy from class seated himself in front of me, making me feel way too conscious about the entire ordeal and thus forcing me to actually pay attention to the movie. It's a piece of shit.

A cure for Wellness is a wonderfully shot, silly mess that is one "Not the eels!" away from being another The Wicker Man. The setting, atmosphere and colour palette help build the eerie tone, which is the best aspect of the film; though starting the film with this tone rather than building it up leaves no to room to establish DeHaan's character as sympathetic. The mother is out of place, the side characters are like unhelpful NPCs, and the plot is hokey and too cliché-ridden to be enjoyable.

Beautiful shot movie with a great premise and air of mystery. Acting is strong throughout the whole cast. The first two-thirds only suffer from poor dialog that tells right before it shows. The last third has enough fake out endings to be the fourth lord of the rings films and is filled with horror tropes that don't fit this world. The tropes end up really hurting the movie and taking away most of what its built up.

Aesthetically, an absolutely gorgeous film. Truly beautiful cinematography. Great locations and set design really enhance this, too. I really like the gothic tone it has. It certainly had its squeamish moments. Otherwise, I couldn't really get into it. It's at least 30 minutes too long. Some of the visual choices, and also the music choices, are quite pretentious, which took me out of the story. Definitely cool to have an original movie these days, but it's not entirely successful.

The absolutely beautiful visuals is what keeps this movie from being a slog. I don't think it was nearly as bad as the reviews made it out to be, but it certainly was predictable and didn't have the best writing. The story itself was interesting enough, but I really did not like the ending. I don't regret watching it at all, I'm just becoming more critical of movies.

This is the type of film that kind of keeps you hanging on until it just let you down at the end. The performances were good enough (though I am always disappointed with Dane DeHaan these days), but the plot was just a little too disjointed, perhaps as an attempt to keep you guessing. We kind of end up with a bit of mess that is altogether also a little silly.

Well, we are all awared of the fact that there're some scenes which makes you feel like the film goes full Shutter Island -also both film's protagonist looks similar- but the impressive thing is that A Cure for Wellness' itself manages to mix up all the genres and eventually comes up with a creepy mindblown-ish horror flick which takes place in historical European places.

From the director of The Ring and Pirates of the Caribbean comes a blend of The Ring, Pirates of the Caribbean... oh and Shutter Island, Wolf of Wall Street, grindhouse movies, I don't even know. It's a real big mess. Some pretty cinematography here and there but it doesn't help the fact that this entire grueling two-hour marathon is nothing more than a DiCaprio wannabe wandering through someone's boring ass nightmare.

I was so excited for this movie for months and hate to say I was pretty disappointed. It is such a beautiful film in terms of location and set, but lord have mercy there are too many loose ends. There are more questions than answers and not in a good way; more like I'm questioning how certain things were supposed to connect and why others were in there at all. The film had such potential to be thrilling and gripping but missed the mark by quite a bit.

I can't say that I blame you if you don't really know what to do with this movie. You should start by accepting that Gore Verbinski is just kinda weird. Unquestionably talented, but, just a little on the strange side. This hits the atmosphere just perfectly and is often as cerebral and creepy as I'd hoped it would be. A time or two it arguably takes this too far and becomes less accessible to the audience in the process. Filmed beautifully and totally worth checking out. Perhaps more than once.

The strong visual side of the movie kind of fools you into thinking it's trying to be a better movie than it is. At its core it's closer to a glorified B horror than an A-lister, but once you accept that it's quite decent. The way-too-long runtime makes me think that the director himself thought he's making something a lot more special than what it is in the end. It had the makings of something pretty great in its niche, but it stretched itself too thin.

Feels like the umpteenth remake of SHUTTER ISLAND to come out in the last decade (not helped by DeHaan’s passing resemblance to DiCaprio) – familiarity may well breed contempt here, and may be a spoiler to suggest it’s clear fairly early on where this story is going; the character relationships do give this an added dose of grotesque perverse energy, spurred on by Isaacs who has a whale of a time as the sinister head of the institution. Not without interest, and stunningly photographed.

In a way I wanted to like this film. It looks magnificent and has no shortage of utterly mad ideas. It's tough not to like a film that features Isaacs pumping murky, eel-filled water down DeHaan's throat. There's just no excuse for it's glacial pace and 2 1/2 hour run time. Pretty much any viewer will see where this film is going, but it will still take hours to get there, largely by making DeHaan ridiculously dumb and lacking in even the most basic curiosity.

Not a bad effort. Unfortunately the suspenseful moments are exceptionally slow and when it gets to the apex of those moment it retreats and goes around again. Definitely not to everyone's taste, but undeniably fascinating, "A Cure For Wellness" is a film that has to be seen to be believed, a chaotic and totally surreal rollercoaster ride through the halls of a sanitorium with both a sinister secret, as well as a vaguely disconcerting eel problem, that never slows down, and never conforms to the storytelling norms that should be rightfully imposed upon it. Original, breathtakingly cinematic, genuinely horrifying, and an unmissable experience.
