Zemeckis continues to try and convince audiences that motion-capture animation is the future of movies, and despite his mostly faithful adaptation of 'A Christmas Carol,' I still don't love the format. The animation looks great, but something didn't quite gel here, perhaps because it's never suited young audiences and I didn't agree with a lot of the actors chosen, as well as a few liberties taken with the classic. Does it look great? Yes. Is it a great story? Yes. Is it a great movie? No.

Manages to somehow present all of the key elements of the story without including any emotion or suspense. The special effects sequences, especially the baffling chase scene during the third ghost's visit, really detract from the actual events of the film. There were a few effective scenes near the beginning of the film, but other than that it was a wasted effort.

Sure, this is probably the umpteenth adaptation of the classic tale by the great Charles Dickens that we frankly didn't need but it does remain faithful and true to the essence of the story. And I would say that it is a good enough adaptation. It is not, however, a particularly great one. I always appreciate a visual extravaganza but there is such a thing as overdoing it. And this where the major weakness of the film lies. The excessive special effects drown out some of the more tender scenes.

(3D review) Obviously, this would've been even more of a bore if I hadn't watched it in 3D. It doesn't capture the Christmas spirit as one would hope for and failed to reach me at gut level, but I'm willing to give other adaptations a shot. It's not that scary really, just loud, same goes for Beowulf. It's cool Zemeckis, we're not deaf...

Zemeckis, what are you doing? Considering how wonderfully subtly a lot of these elements are handled in, for example, Mickey's Christmas Carol, it pissed me off to see Zemeckis juggle everything about just because juggling looks better in 3D. Probably the worst adaptation of Dickens' story I've seen, the acting is ridiculously unbalanced and over-the-top and our friend Zemeckis seems to have forgotten to direct. He needs to snap out of his crap-animation trance and make some real movies again.

The story is classic, the animation is great, it was astonishing when it came out, but there are more timeless adaptations of this story, also more inventive ones. I'm also not completely sold on Carrey as Scrooge, but it might just be a perception thing.

More or less succeeds as a retelling of the story we’ve all seen a million times, though the animation and character models and their movements have a fair bit of uncanny valley in them. Had a major double take seeing that this came out 12 years ago; I swear it feels like way, way less than that. Time hurtles on faster and faster, Father Death beckoning at road’s end.

Decent voice acting. I think my review of remakes always hinges on whether the new adaptation does something worthwhile to dethrone previous entries. The 3D effects weren't enough for me. I couldn't handle the uncanny valley. Most of the film still feels like a glorified tech demo. Fav scene: introducing the Ghost of Christmas Future when they left us hanging for just a bit, then dropped Carrey down the stairs.

While the horror elements are interesting, most of this 'enhanced' retelling of the classic Christmas tale is pretty boring. Coming at the very end of the fifteen year run of Jim-Carrey-can-sell-any-movie-era I expected to be more irritated by his voicing. He is good. The purposely ugly aesthetic is what will keep me from ever revisiting this.

(Viewed on 01/03/15): Moving this classic Dicken's novel into the animated 3D realm is probably the final destination; it has been remade so many times, and the story is so deeply embedded within the culture at large, that it has become overly familiar, so a 'traditional' cinematic adaptation will no longer do. Zemeckis' obsession with motion capture technology appeared to derail his career for a while, but A.C.C is the best one he made, even if the animation is a little cold and rigid.

A good story adaptation with stirring visuals. Great voice acting overall. The fault of this style of motion-capture CGI, however, is that it creates a weird effect that borders on real life and animation (uncanny valley, I guess). It makes for some awkward scenes and clunky characters that distract from the timeless dialogue and story.

Wow, I really hate this style of animation. There isn't a single scene that doesn't draw attention to how unnatural and creepy it all looks. What's the point of using CGI to make something that looks almost-but-not-quite like Colin Firth when you could just film it in live action and use a real Colin Firth? Add in the fact that it's just a boring retread of an overly familiar story and there isn't much to recommend here at all.

Isn't all that incredible to be honest. The CGI is certainly quite good but the film feels like it comedically fills the stereotype that things need to be "actioned up" for American audiences. It's not bad and there are some genuinely entertaining moments but when so many adaptations have been done this one doesn't stand out in my mind beyond "oh that CGI one."

I don't see the big deal either way, it's a fairly standard adaptation of A Christmas Carol with Jim Carrey doing a good job of channeling Alastair Sim and pretty but waxy looking visuals. It's not really anything we haven't seen before and it brings nothing new to the table as an adaptation but it stands on its own reasonably well as a mildly enjoyable Christmas morality tale.

Was this classic always this unentertaining or is it worn out? Surely we can't put the blame entirely on the pointless3-D zoom-in, pop-out shenanigans & given the fim's Victorian-era speech 1 can't help but imagine the story was lifted straight from the original book. If so, it was certainly made 4 children since Scrooge's backstory is far 2 slight 2 explain his bah-humbug-isms & his literal overnight transformation into good-hearted Christmas devotee feels woefully glib if not outright false.

Just an average film which I think would have been better as a live-action movie. It was nice to see the screenwriters stick relatively close to the source material, but there were times that the movie dragged on and on and on and on.....and I hated the Ghost of Christmas Present. So annoying. Additionally, this form of computer animation is so creepy - the eyes are dead, the mouths aren't expressive enough and Gary Oldman is scary. Again, it's okay, but not great.

On paper, this cast and film-maker should have slam-dunked this material, but sadly (and frustratingly) it never quite takes off – by far the least of Zemeckis’ motion capture experiments because the set and character designs are so hideously ugly (Oldman eeek!), and his performers tamped down; you keep waiting for Carrey to put a distinctive stamp on his character which never comes, and the storytelling itself plods along the well-worn path taken by the multitude of other (better) adaptations.

This was actually quite horrifying in the first act. I'm talking about rivalling to some proper horror movies. I haven't read the book, but going by the dialogue, this is probably a decently faithful adaptation. And I honestly don't know if that's a good thing. It's very tedious for children to listen to 200 year old dialogue and the story isn't that riveting to adults. Especially as the animation is that godawful Polar Express motion capture nightmare fuel.

The animation, performance and the score are this films strong points, but sadly after a solid first act the film loses it. A Christmas Carol has been adapted in every way possible but this version has got to be one of the darkest ones I've seen. It remains pretty faithful to the tone and language of Dicken's book. There's a fine imagery, the opening shot and all the flying sequences above Victorian London are exceptionally neat, the voice work is decent. Zemeckis is one of the hardly any who knows how to be proactive with 3-D. This is extremely expensive technology that adds nothing of value to the movie-going experience when for 100 years we've been mesmerized and moved by two-dimensional movies that with organic talent have provided more than enough three-dimensional reality. But Zemeckis is either uninterested in its use as a gimmick or he is but is equally or more interested in using it as a storytelling enhancement.

Disjointed. The overblown 3D animation distracts from the story rather than adding to it. That kind of poorly integrated showmanship could only appeal to children. Yet the use of some of the original text, tongue in cheek humor, and realistic style animation seem to be meant to appeal to adults while the ghost scenes would likely scare small children. On the whole this film does not seem know what audience it's trying to appeal to. The result left me sometimes bored, other times creeped out.

The acting ranges from decent (Oldman, Carrey) to hilariously bad (Firth), the animation, whilst undeniably impressive, is distracting and gimmicky and everything just feels rushed. Worst of all, it never evoked the Christmas spirit or had any heartwarming moments. This movie was the first time I found myself enjoying and impressed by motion capture as a form of animation. Lots of creativity, but at times screamed "look what we can do" and lacked the heart of other adaptions. A prime example is torturous simulator-esque chase scene that Zemeckis puts in all his mo-cap films. The animation is at times outstanding, and there is some degree of faith to the novel in Zemeckis' retelling. It lacks a little spirit, and Carrey's voice is acting largely good bar his various accents faltering every so often. All-in-all however, despite some negatives, this is a nice adaptation.

The characters (especially Scrooge) still don't look right, especially compared with how beautiful the backgrounds and setpieces looked. It's also surprisingly scary - don't take little kids to this. This would have worked better as either a cartoony adaptation or a live action movie. I'll never be sold on mo-cap, especially not on a story that's been done to death.

Way to scary for little kids. It couldn't keep my interest and Jim Carrey's multiple characters were all annoying.
