Perhaps not as painful as setting your crotch on fire and having it stomped out... but, close.

Journey to the West as a romantic melodrama slapstick comedy? I'd be very disappointed if I didn't know there would be a part 2. There's not much in the way of Monkey King powers and he spends most of the film being outmatched. Still, it's a nice parody of the classical Chinese story. Fav scene: the gang thinking their fake invisibility scrolls were working and the women going along with it.

Somehow the film manages to oscillate between different tones without losing its way. It makes for the best kind of exaggerated epic fantasy story that's not too serious.

Much lower than expected!!

It starts slow and ends up suddenly exponentially complex, especially to an audience not used to the mythology the movie is based on. In between however, there are many funny skits in a fast paced blank-faced humour so it is entertaining still.

BlurayRip FGT.

Crazy and unexpectedly fun.

It can be hard to make sense of what's going on at times, and the comedy is too broad for me, but it's still entertainingly ridiculous.

A distressingly good moleitau, equal parts dick-stomping humor and genuine emotion. To the uninitiated, the Buddhist plot and modern cultural subtext make the film even more nonsensical than it was probably meant to be, which also makes it better than it probably is.

Very fun and very brainless comedy Chinese style. The best film based on monkey king myth for sure, and possibly best wuxia comedy. Stephen Chow is in his top form, and supporting cast is great too.
