A bizarre meta-horror featuring the Godfather of Gore Lucio Fulci as himself as he gets drawn into a barely comprehensible web of madness and murder. It's a bit clumsy, and the premise doesn't work entirely, but it is interesting enough and I've got a lot of time for the man. It features a load of parts of other films (that I haven't yet seen), which just about works in the context of this film. Probably one for Fulci fans only..

My least favorite episode from a television series (The Clips Show) is now a full fledged movie! The idea is strong enough but the eventual Nightbreed psychiatrist killer plot puts Fulci seeing a gore fantasy with literally every action he takes. Sam Raimi would've made this absolutely hilarious, but he probably would've cast his brother Ted.

The beginning is so good it doesn't prepare you for how much of a slog this pans out to be.

(Viewed on 30/09/13): Cat In The Brain is either a great meta horror on the creative process, a playful exploration of the darker side of human nature which also serves as a kind of knowing rebuttal to Fulci's censors and critics, or a long winded rationalisation on his part to avoid confronting how fundamentally disturbed he was. It is effective to a point, not to mention daring, but Fulci lacked the talent to execute this sort of material properly. i.e intelligently.

Even by Lucio Fuici's standards, this is strange. It's both jaw droppingly lurid, dull, obtuse, exceptionally sexist and pretentious, fascinating, and even more adjectives besides. It's either a tour of Fulci's mind through a meta-film about himself being tormented by his work (and yet still revealing in gore and nudity) or a parody of himself and other horror films; either way it's difficult to forget.

Incredible, and I use that word with full malice aforethought. Beyond that, I'm speechless.

Another miss, although this one is partly saved by the self-refertial humor. Fulci stars in this as a horror director who think he's losing his mind. It incorporates a lot of footage from Fulci's other movies, at best it can be said the way these are edited into this is very skillfully done. The whole plot is way too thin to carry this movie. So this is only recommended for Fulci fans wanting to see the director making fun of himself.

Lucio Fulci #4

Doesn't quite fit into any sub genre of horror. Kind of like throwing crap at a wall, eventually some will stick, and if you throw enough, you have 'ART'. It's worth a watch, but not much more.

Perhaps I needed to watch more Fulci before I saw this one, because I felt like there was some joke I was not getting. I feel like Fulci does not have the talent to pull off a meta-horror movie.
