Every year, a bunch of grasshoppers come to the anthill and eat what the ants have gathered for them. The "offering", as the ants call the ritual, is a part of their fate. One day in spring, when the offering's preparation has just been finished, Flik, unliked inventor ant, accidentally drops the whole offered seeds into the river. The grasshoppers come and give the ants a second chance to collect food until fall... (imdb)

A solid sophomore effort from Pixar that established them as a creative force to reckoned with. The central story is rather predictable (a variation on Seven Samurai/Magnificent Seven/Three Amigos), but it's surrounded by so many great characters and hilarious moments that you simply don't care.

Some of the extra computer-y 90s PC game animation bugs me a bit (couldn't resist) but that's the only real flaw of this excellant offering of clever world-building (see the bug bar-where everyone can get a good buzz), great humour, and an engaging protagonist in the creative but hard-luck Flik. The surprisingly dark antagonist climax ("Let this be a lesson...Ideas are very dangerous things!") and the inspiring hero moment after ("You're wrong, Hopper") highlight some compelling themes as well.

Lesser Pixar, certainly, but nowhere near as middling as Cars. Like Cars, it borrows its plotline from another film, but Seven Samurai is obviously far more compelling than Doc Hollywood. The vocal cast is outstanding, which is true of every Pixar flick but especially here. The villains are more memorable than the heroes in this one, and I think Spacey's badass-ery is the main reason for that. Spectacular final battle, and the bird sequence is a ton of fun. Underappreciated film.

The one classic Pixar I hadn't seen yet! And it holds up!! The politics are good, there's so much atmosphere, and it's fun all the way thru. Yeah, it has the standard Pixar plot structure, but that's okay, it's also got socialist fire and rebellion against abusive hierarchies.

A Bug's Life had the tough task of following Pixar's debut feature 'Toy Story'. This is one of the few Pixar films that I don't bother rewatching very often but looking back this was impressively imaginative and thoroughly enjoyable. All that tarnishes this film is when you look at Pixar's superior work since, it's very average in comparison. And it's easy to compare this with Dreamworks' 'Antz' which was released around about the same time, but this is undoubtedly the better of the two films.

I find this to be an underrated Pixar movie. There is a really good sense of dread and built around the grasshoppers and their scenes, and enough vile in how they are pulled off to make their comeuppance seem that much more satisfying. Arguably the side characters are too one-dimensional, but I find that I get enough laughs from them.

Synopsis: A misfit ant, looking for "warriors" to save his colony from greedy grasshoppers, recruits a group of bugs that turn out to be circus bugs. Reaction: Watching A Bug's Life wasn't the worst movie, but will say is one of Pixar's weaker movies, I will say the actors did an AMAZING job on their characters and made it, so this movie wasn't lower on the list. Final: Is an average Pixar Movie, nothing fancy, and I believe if it wasn't for the actors, this have been ranked by others lower.

If Seven Samurai was an animated Western with anthropomorphic bugs. Crazy underrated. Not only better than much of Pixar's recent output, but better than most modern children's films period. The cast is great, voicing a large host of unique and charming characters. Not every bit of humour lands, but it never embarrasses itself. The animation shows its limitations 20 years on, but it still looks excellent for the time.

This is far from my favorite Pixar film, but it's still a cut above usual animated fare. The adventurous story features some fun action, inspired vocal performances, and a beautiful realization of what a global insect world could look like. Pixar and company were still figuring out their own special brand of magic here, but the movie still holds up today.

Pixar doesn't make bad movies and this is just even more proof of that. It's solidly animated, the voice cast is tremendously talented and everything lends it's hand to creating a vibrant and innovative film that is caters to all audiences to keep people invested. It seems like a recurring theme of Pixar to realize parents will be watching and when animated films take that into account they immediately elevate the quality.

A daft play on 7 Samurai/Magnificent Seven. Not at the level of Toy Story or Nemo but being Pixar stayed above a fair threshold & delivered. Tho not close to 1 of their best.

A Bug's Life fits in the weird place where it's better than bad Pixar (2010's) but not as good as classic Pixar (every other time period). It struggles to find a sure voice and the plot is about as generic as it gets. I would be able to forgive it these flaws but the side characters are either broadly drawn or just plain eccentric for no real reason. I suppose I could still take it over most modern non-Pixar animated fare but that is just damning with faint praise.

The team behind it may have impeccable pedigree both before and since, but this for me is one of the weaker Disney-Pixar movies. The "disparate band of misfits" trope just feels copy-pasted from Toy Story, and the main characters don't really have room for a proper arc in the brief running time. The main plot of being antagonised by bullying crickets doesn't quite stack up either. But, it's kid-friendly, full of action, and looks nice, so I can't give too low a score.

I will now be unoriginal and say this is "lesser PIXAR" and while "it's not their best" it's certainly "solid." Actually I would probably rank this higher among PIXAR works than most, but that has more to do with my finding a lot of their titles overrated than the movie being that fantastic.

A pretty simplistic and bog-standard story about a pariah rallying his fellow ants to overthrow their evil grasshopper overlords and winning the heart of his true love, the princess. A Bug's Life is not one of my favorite Pixar films, but that doesn't mean that it is a bad picture. It is great to hear all of the great actors and actresses in this movie. Phyllis Diller is always a pleasure to hear. Pixar could not have found anybody better than Dave Foley to play the part of Flik. Kevin Spacey plays a great antagonist, as well. The story is a retelling of Seven Samurai, as well as an Aesop fable. As such, the story doesn't really break any new ground, but it was still cut

Seven Samurai with some of my favorite 90s comedy stars! Hooray! A Bug's Life is ok, I think the art design is a little lacking, and the story does suffer from not being very original, but it's enjoyable. Pixar have done a lot better and we all know it, so I'm going to use the remaining characters to laugh at ShogunRua for needlessly using his review to defend the honor of grasshoppers in his review of an animated film about talking insects.

Great Pixar movie that got forgotten a bit, being sandwiched between two Toy Stories. It's basically Seven Samurai with ants and a strong dose of class warfare politics, but with the kind of imagination and humour Pixar is now famous for. While it doesn't have characters as memorable as Toy Story, it's still one of the best things to come out of Pixar.

Much less sophisticated than the best Pixar films, it still has many fine elements, with Spacey a terrific villian and some first-rate computer animation that still impresses, though it has since been bested by later films. Resolutely aimed at younger kids, resulting in hectic, exhausting action scenes, and a seeming overload of in-your-face characters, though the eclectic voice cast seems to be having fun. Can't compare to the wonderful TOY STORY films, but endearing enough.

Following on the hot tail of the groundbreaking Toy Story, Pixar's follow-up is another childhood fave of mine. But unlike Toy Story, it hasn't stayed with me over the years. Not to say it's purely a children's film, it's just that this one isn't as clever as Pixar's previous efforts, nor does it have the emotional weight of their later films. At least the animation had a huge improvement.
