This is one of the most authentic movies about Cosa Nostra. Acting is great, has a good story and quite a few life lessons you could learn from. Watching De Niro as a commoner in a mob movie sure feels weird but they couldn't have found anyone better than Palminteri for the role.

A coming of age drama disguised as a gangster film, ABT boasts a solid script and performance by Palminteri, who steals the show in the breakout role of Sonny, a neighbourhood crime figure of moderate complexity who acts as a surrogate father to C, played with varying degrees of success by Brancato. The interracial romance isn't totally convincing--the corny music accompanying their courtship doesn't help--but it was somewhat new in this milieu, and there are few hard hitting scenes.

pretty run of the mill directing, could've been any random dude, so de niro could've focused more on his acting. this seems more than anything like a failed attempt to cash in on the goodfellas-hype. it's not abysmal, but it's all been done way better shortly before, maybe except for the interracial stuff. palminteri does a decent job, but doesn't particularly stand out. the name "calogero" remains the only memorable thing here. i don't know if that's good or bad. ok, it is probably bad.

Strong performances, good direction. I'm a sucker for gangster dramas and this hits all the right notes with solid characters and a good story. It's sort of a humanizing, neighborhood version of Goodfellas with a dash of morality added to the crime boss. It's not a top-level gangster classic, but it's definitely second-tier and worth a watch for fans of the genre. The heated race relations of the 1960s add to the backdrop, bringing to life a tense environment that transports viewers to the era.

I haven't read the original script or stage play but the moment Palminteri said, "Have you ever read Machiavelli?" I had to immediately assume some retard exec was looking things over and thought that having 30 discussions about whether it is better to be feared or loved was too subtle. Good lord, we get it. It's got a bit of this kid learnin' about morality. Early on in the film they kept saying, "You'll understand when you're older." but this is so blunt a 5 year old could understand it.

Thought this was "Goodfellas" when I first turned it on. De Niro's directorial debut is a complex coming-of-age tale under different terms. The dual father roles of De Niro and Palminteri play well off each other; the men are similar in perspective despite their different lives. The Bronx's racial divide is handled quite well (though the romance angle is tacked on and drug down by excruciatingly-long slo-mo shots), and everyone played their parts quite well. Definitely a must-see genre flick.

A competent film with a strong cast, but everything about it feels too familiar. The story, the setting and the characters are all recycled from older, better films. It just doesn't add up to much and is completely devoid of anything that would otherwise make it stand out among the horde of mafia movies.

Strongest aspects of this film is how it deals with racial undertones and Palminteri's strong performance. The problem with De Niro directing a gangster movie is that it would always look like something Scorsese had done before him. My main gripe was the relationship between Calogero and Jane. It felt fake, forced, unbelievable and corny. Its a decent addition to the genre though flawed.

Themes of heated race relations and working class disdain towards organized crime take the backseat in this coming of age story. In the front seat is a tale of a boy’s coming to acknowledge the flaws in his role models while still learning from what wisdom they have to offer. And true, while this alone doesn’t make the film unique by any stretch, it’s its underdeveloped other themes that make it lacking in completion.

A coming-of-age story intertwined with Mafia, this movie shows an interesting slice of growing in Bronx. Except Lilo Brancato felt stiff throughout the movie, and his narrator did greater justice to his role.

Finely detailed coming of ager is stylistically reminiscent of GOODFELLAS (and hampered by some too intrusive needle drops on the soundtrack), but as an actor’s showcase it delivers in spades, especially as Palminteri and De Niro subtly enrich the other’s performance; Palminteri’s screenplay cleverly ties the two father figures conflicting value systems with a larger societal conflict between “old school” Mafia and 60s racial politics/counter culture: a fascinating angle rarely explored.

Surprisingly, pretty underrated. The journey C goes through, that stands in the middle of the mindsets of two very different men,is actually very engaging and unique.Needless to say De Niro and Paliminteri are great and their fingerprints are all over the film. The Bronx as a place is very important and De Niro as director does a wonderful job establishing it and making it feel lived in.There is some awkward acting and some familiarites in the story beats but it stays interesting throughout.

A mobster flick that seperates itself from the rest of the genre through more grounded writing and deeply defined characters is especially noteworthy for asking its audience to truly question its proposed morality rather than simply romanticizing the bad guys.

This goes about the way a film with a rookie director should: it's deeply personal, amateurish, and flawed. De Niro knows about gangster movies and growing up in NYC but he doesn't quite know how to direct. There are a lot of flat shots and very poor editing. The story mostly works, everything with De Niro and Palminteri is strong but the racial themes the story takes are badly underdeveloped and at the expense of the better story about having two fathers. A Bronx Tale is still a solid film.

It adds a little perspective to the genre, I guess. The main character doesn't seem sharp enough to be worthy of any protege. Is this the point? Some bad acting, but still good. A few exchanges are so terrible, you wince and snatch at your stomach. The girl who played the AA love interest made me want to eat my grandma's day-old diaper. Racy drama after Scorsese. The struggle between father and gangster over son, didn't seem to play out as intended. Cliche. Abusive amounts of music. Overwrought.

A Bronx Tale may not the best De Niro's performance. He was directed, and only as a supporting actor. Yet it is one of the greatest mob movie I've ever seen. Although the story is not about gunfight or killing scene, nor Pesci's swearing word like in Casino or Goodfellas, still this movie deliver very good mobster drama. The story seems very real and deep, more like family drama and it is very strong. It tells us to be or not to be a gangster, depends on how we perceive the movie.

Fun little gangster film about the dichotomy between an actual father and a father figure. It's a little blunt at times, but I still liked it. I can confidently say this is the first time I've liked Chazz Palminteri in anything, while I like De Niro in tough-father roles and it's hard not to go for Italian gangster movies with good soundtracks, like this one. So yeah. A lot of fun.

In De Niro's directional debut, we see him taking a back seat as a supporting actor in this film as Chazz Palminteri, takes his one man stage show to the big screen.
Based on some true events in Chazz Palminteri's life growing up, A Bronx Tale saw freshly plucked actors and actresses take the main parts next to De Niro and Palminteri, in order to keep the film authentic.
A Bronx Tale is a film of many layers, from the star crossed lovers, who's friends and families are against each other

This is one of those actor-made movies that are pleasantly surprising. Both Palminteri's script and De Niro's directing turn out to be more than capable and the good acting really helps. Still, there are little moments all along that don't entirely work, and by the last quarter of the film it started to fall apart for me. The finale was unpredictable to its credit but still underwhelmed me.
