There may be a serious lack of character and story development here, but that does not mean the concept is lacking or not entertaining. It's short enough not to out stay its welcome or drag its simplistic plot out too much. But most of all I found "9" too be charming and visually just fantastic. Full of lovely little artistic touches and nuances, personally I found myself enjoying every second of this film, despite its obvious faults.

9 is a nice and well animated story of friendchip and solidarity. Okay the story got some flaws, but the style is amazing. It always reminds me a bit on the good old Tim Burton style. "9" plays in a dark and dystopian world. Almost everything is destroyed and dead. Those puppets are quiet cool ,too. Good work and I hope to see more by Acker in common years.

Cool visuals and action, and Shane Acker seems like an exciting new talent provided someone else writes the script next time. The story is basically post apocalyptic paint-by-numbers; other than being about sock puppets (and exceedingly flat characters), there's little that differentiates the plot from Terminator Salvation.

Character development? That would be asking too much. Story structure? Go to place A, then to place B, back to place A only to set out to a new place B. Even the animation dropped in certain areas. Feels like you are watching the same ten minute movie over and over, this is not a positive.

The trailer for this movie was ten times better than the movie. It had a tight coheed and cambria soundtrack with intense action and awesome creature. The movie was just boring. It had absolutely no character devolopement and it was the same thing happening over and over again. an hour of sitting through this movie was grueling so thank goodness it wasn't any longer than that. The visuals were pretty cool but that's pretty much it.

Acker uses the small band of survivors as a proxy for the range of characteristics found in humankind, from the most heroic and caring to the basest and most destructive, to hold a mirror up to current human condition. The dialogue and story development are both a little light but the detailed animated action more than compensates for it.

Am I the highest ranking here? Perhaps so. Anyway, I adore this movie and view it (both plot, obviously and less obviously, characters) as an allegory for something much deeper than a lot of mainstream stuff, both politically and psychologically. It's not the deepest movie ever, don't get me wrong, but I appreciate the fact you can think about it. Besides that, some great animation, great scenery (sucker for this stuff), and some genuinely memorable scenes.

The initial lack of story and character backgrounds is appropriate for the film's shocking post-apocalyptic world (the "machine" is a compelling threat), as we're dropped into the desolate setting as naive as our protagonist; the exposition to follow is mostly tasteful (save for the scientist's heavy-handed yet still insufficient final explanation) and the characters that develop feel shallow but natural. Most significantly though, the animation and action set pieces are consistently fantastic.

One of the first movies that got me into film and animation as well. It isn’t exactly a strong character piece, but it in my opinion, it handles some really important themes and messages in a pretty effective, short way that it just gets better for me on each viewing. It’s beautiful to look at and I wish there were more animated horror movies for bigger kids and young adults like this. I liked it.

SackBoy vs SkyNet. Great animation, but who is the target audience? It's way too dark and scary for small kids, but the story is too simple and silly to keep teens and adults engrossed. It works better as a tech demo than a short.

Like one long dreary cutscene that drags on and on, except that there have been plenty of popular games with stories deeper and more gripping, and with better exposition. The sack creatures are each given one character trait. Worse, the whole thing seems derivative of earlier media; even the art direction gives us nothing we haven't seen before in projects like The Matrix, City of Lost Children, The Dark Crystal, Little Big Planet, Tool videos, and a ton of anime.

The short is better because it remains very concise without being drawn out. Though none of 9 is boring nothing about it feels original like the short. This is most likely because 9 feels like a mix of Fallout, The Lord of the Rings, The Matrix, Toy Story and a bit of Star Wars at the end. Shame because the art direction really is stellar.

Cliche, trite and sometimes even mean spirited, 9 presents quite common themes in an interesting setting. Sadly mindless action scenes dominate most of the movie. The main characters are completely flat and their motivations much too simple minded. The fact that it is technically a very solid piece saves it from a much worse rating.

I know the visuals are the first thing most reviews clamour over, and with good cause. There are also certainly things to explore (too many for a mini-review), but to touch on one: drawing a dichotomy between two recent flicks, I preferred the way 9 dealt with "the technology question" over Surrogates; here it was more a case of technology acting on its own, rather than humans, which I dug. And I applaud this flick for being able to make an emotional connection with the audience. Oscar sleeper.

This would make a pretty good video game, as it's basically a series of action sequences with just the right amount of obstacles strung together with lulls of plot. It's fun to watch, the visuals are enticing and the short length ensures it doesn't get old, but it also feels a bit lacking even with all the heavier stuff about humanity.

Gorgeous, creepy visuals (that are probably way too intense for most children under a certain age) can't help the fact that the narrative is pretty dismal. In the first third a character gets taken and has to be rescued. Then, in the second third, two characters get taken and have to be rescued. In the final third, THREE characters get taken and have to be rescued. It's all over in just 75 minutes and thus is probably worthwhile. But looking at it's style it could and should have been much more.

Sub-par visuals, a lame story, and terrible voice acting turn something that could have been interesting into a dull experience. I've not seen the short film this feature-length adaptation is based on, but it really doesn't translate well to long format. So much of it just feels like padding that doesn't engage the viewer in the world the visuals are trying to create. WALL-E did the whole "world after humanity" thing a lot better the year before this emerged.

A bit of post-apocalyptic steampunk that, despite taking place in a world scorched by technology, remains optimistic by suggesting that science can be used to humanity's compassionate advantage. It is a little on the nose, but it's also compellingly dark and light on goofy animated schmaltz. The animation itself is astoundingly detailed, and the action scenes are cleverly choreographed.

A movie for 13 year old philosophers, regressed Marxist sociologists, or Taoist paranoid schizophrenics. The story's simplicity of narrative and character was refreshing, as was its brutally frank depiction of death. But it felt like it was far too broad for what was clearly going to be a niche story with a small audience - and ultimately the film pleases no one.

The film was too wannabe epic, but didn't have the heart or plot behind it to work. Also the ending seemed like they had just destroyed the "villain" who was the only creator of life. And there was nothing established that the heroes were now going to be able to create better life from his parts. And in my mind if it comes to the end of all reproductive life anything that can create life, no matter how evil, is the best life form on the planet. Just hope for the best in the future.

I'm shocked that not more people love this. I was expecting to come here and see a 80 PSI, but no. 46. What? The characters are engaging, the visuals not exactly top-of-the-line CGI but perfect for the film's atmosphere, and while I was slightly skeptical for the first half of it upon first viewing (the pacing is a bit off) the last half blew me away and I loved it even more on second viewing. If I wasn't such a sucker for 3D animation (and what you get here really is outstanding), "9" certainly wouldn't get a 9/10 from me. But even with the visuals put aside, there's still a dark classic tale to enjoy. The underlying story of the world is very basic indeed, but it fulfills it's purpose of explaining the setting perfectly. Not much to complain about in the action department either, and the characters were crafted with way to much care and detail for me not to empathize with them.

Feels more like a CGI student's project than a film - a rather good student at that as the whole thing is pleasing to the eye and easily the best quality computer animated film I have seen so far. Unfortunately, this was the only thing keeping me watching until the end as the story itself misses on every good opportunity presented to it. More time spent on developing the story and the events leading up to it would have gone a long way to improving a rather empty and pointless journey.

Difficult 2 watch w/out constantly imagining the animated short it sprung from, w/ no more than 10 minutes worth of story stretched well past its breaking point to 90 unoriginal & unembroidered minutes. The actions of the group of nanobots are thrilling and engaging, and their enemies plenty scary, although after a while it does begin to seem like just battle after battle after battle. It looked great, but I thought the story was a little weak.

Surreal and awesome. Sad it didn't get much more attention.

Amazing visuals, but not very interesting otherwise.

I wanted to give up on 9 after just 30 minutes and now really wish I had. Representing everything that's bad about the glut of modern CGI flicks (poorly-written, derivative, uninventive characters, visuals over story, flat A-list voice acting...) its worst crime is expecting, nay relying, on the audience to sympathise with characters we do not know in a story we haven't experienced develop. Whatever comment it was trying to make on science and spirituality is completely lost too.
