The film tells the story of the Australian Light Horse cavalry which operated in the desert at the Sinai and Palestine Campaign during World War I. It follows the adventures of three rowdy heroes in fighting and romance. The film culminates at the Battle of Beersheba which is reputedly "the last successful cavalry charge in history". The film was clearly a propaganda weapon, to aid in recruitment and lift the pride of Australians at home during World War II. (Wikipedia)

My great-grandfather was part of the Australian Light Horse during WWI and so this film has some personal significance for me, but even so the mythologising of war and over-the-top patriotism (bordering on jingoism at times) does not do much for me. Having said that, the battle scenes and depiction of masses of men and horses travelling through the desert (filmed at Cronulla) are epic and authentic (remembering that Chauvel's father was Sir Harry Chauvel).

Mostly valuable from a historic point-of-view as one of Australia's big war film successes coming at the dawn of the second World War. Found the surrounding happenings clumsy and off-point, but the battle scenes are very interesting! Those were of high quality and done with a Australian touch. A nice change from the Hollywood style of war.

The quality of the rip made it really difficult to watch. It was hard to hear what was being said at times, particularly from the 'German's'. This also made it hard to follow and I'm not really completely sure of the plot. Some scenes were interesting, but I couldn't really judge it as a whole.
