Lead by brilliantly naturalistic writing and acting, the initial scenes of harrowing abuse give way to the mundanity of the institution, whose various inmates reveals the hodge-podge of Australian society of this era. The glorious 16mm cinematography is indeed primitive, but its Kodak aesthetic gives this film the early-morning warmth this seemingly hopeless story deserves.
