Matthew Perry falls off a bridge and gets sucked into a vortex that magically transforms him into Zac Efron. He then uses his youthful disguise to score with his hot daughter. Okay, no, that's not what happens, but that would have made for a better movie.

When I first saw the trailer for this movie, I wanted to avoid it like the plague. Somehow, I ended up getting dragged along to see this movie and it actually wasn't that bad. In fact, it was actually... kind of enjoyable. It by no means earns a spot on my list of favourite movies, but for what it was, it was cute and at times pretty funny.

I was dragged into this movie, and I did NOT want to see it. I mean, Zac Efron? unoriginal story? just another one of those moral tales that we have always seen. BUT, it has some pretty hilarious comedy, like the Lord of the Rings fetish, and Efron....wasn't that bad.

Efron is a guy that I thought I hated (was it the haircut? probably.), but has turned out to be pretty good for comedic roles. Along with some other talented comedic actors like Tom Lennon, they make this standard story work nicely.

This movie has a subplot with Zac Efron's daughter wanting to fuck him because he doesn't know he's her dad. Can we get a fucked up, hard R body swap movie? Like, a combo of 13 Going on 30 and Oldboy. This is a movie the world needs. At the very least, can we get a scene of Zac Efron fucking Leslie Mann? Anything, really. I'll wait. I've got time.

A good movie that gets caught up in what bad scripts do. It has heart but it doesn't fully embrace it--which could be the point, but it makes for a different kind of film, one that expects a lot of its audience. It succumbs to portraying high school as clique-v.-clique at one turn and then realistically at another. I give the film a break, though, since it proves Efron to be a great actor. Decent drama, comedy, and additional performances as well.

Some of this movie was uncomfortable to watch. Can you imagine when the daughter finds out later on that she was trying to make out with a younger version of her own dad? Now the funny part of this was the side story between Lennon/Hardin. Lennon had me laughing in some spots with his attempts to woo the principal. That made the movie somewhat watchable, as he taught me the art of peacocking.

Zac Efron withholds some undeniable talent. Something about him strikes a chord of natural movie-star quality, and while he might have the charm, '17 Again' is not 'Big', not even '13 Going on 30.' The movie never made me believe in its 'magic'-- I mean, come on Leslie Mann-- if he looks just like your husband twenty years ago, you would know. The only bright spot of this shallow film is Thomas Lennon, who's also hilarious in 'I Love You, Man'. Zac Efron has the chops, his movie here does not.

I really wanted to loathe this film (Efron in particular), but I couldn't. Other than the requisite dance number at the start, it's a surprisingly likeable film despite the standard cliche nature of the plot. The cast makes it work, and Efron shows good potential as a comedic actor. He's got enough charm to be a movie star for a very long time, and you know it's a solid performance when I actually believed he would grow up to be Matt Perry. Consider it a middle-aged sequel to Big.

It’s hard to recall a film that drops the ball with a screenplay that takes the most unsettling angle at every plot point – if the height of hilarity for you is the grossly old fashioned trope of a father’s obsession with his daughter’s chastity turning to a plain gross “what can I do? My daughter is coming on to *me*”, then have at it I guess – the cast and concepts might have worked if the ick factor hadn’t been turned up so high. At least Efron delivers a pretty good, likable performance.

Kinda fuses some ideas from body swap and time travel high school comedies to make a whole that's both and neither at once. That aspect isn't too bad, but the fairly extensive subplot with Thomas Lennon trying to seduce/date the principal is insufferable, it has severely undercooked bully villain and underdog sports aspects, and the ending is bizarrely sudden and muted.

You gotta consider it is what it is, it never aimed for an Oscar and it is not a new theme, so head in with low expectations. But it was still an interesting take on it, and surprisingly it still explored well some more emotional father/son father/daughter moments, unusual romance too. Acting holds as well

This is a guilty pleasure film. I'm crazy about Zac Efron. Been watching him since Disney' High School Musical, and everything he's acted in reminds me of the little brother I wish I had. I delight in his successes - even in the most formulaic plots one has seen 100 times, which is '17 Again.' If you don't like Efron, don't go. There is nothing revelatory about it. It beats many time-shift films of the pre-2009 era. The teenage condition and situations are harmless, but quite amusing.

And yet he walks into his high school not as a child, but as an adult. He's learned the value of sexual responsibility (a lesson many of his teenage contemporaries and some of his school's employees definitely have not). He understands the importance of wisdom and experience. And, as he looks at the world through his suddenly younger eyes, he realizes that all he wants--all he needs--is the adult life he chose and made for himself. (pluggedin.com)

i'm generally a sucker for classic "what if" scenarios, and this one isn't half bad. watching zac effon be zac effron on screen was a little bit painful, and it was a little heart-breaking to see matthew perry in such a depressing role. i think there was definitely a problem of mis-casting in this film, as almost every character felt grossly misrepresented. this fits into the lowest common denominator as far as films go, but for what it was, it had some pleasant moments.

Does the genre credit - the best pall acting as day chasing the principal was a great plot. Who knew Klingon/Elvish could be such a great chat up line. I would make this as a film closer to Back to the Future (but in reverse) than films like Big.

I never expected much of this movie. I figured it was just a retread of the ideas covered in films like Big, Freaky Friday or even It's a Wonderful Life. Additionally, I hadn't given a second thought to Efron after HSM. However, the acting is really good for this type of film, the script is full of funny dialogue and there are lots of uncomfortable topics that a weaker movie would have avoided. Moments with Efron & Mann in particular are hilariously awkward as is the Lennon/Hardin relationship.

17 again stands at the top of the quirky teenage comedy genre. It does not attempt any moments of extravaganza nor does it need to, indeed, the distinctly mediocre cast are able to adhere to the relativity simple yet amusing screenplay and are thus able to deliver a flawless performance. There is nothing wrong with this film and it's predictability merely acts a distraction for its ordinary premise.

This movie reminds me of "Freaky Friday" except involving a male character. The premise of a sad middle aged man (Matthew Perry) being turned back into a high school student seems like a silly plot twist. The think I liked about it though was that he had to fix his life by staying on the right path that his spirit guide set him on. The real comedy comes from Thomas Lennon and Melora Hardin whose relationship based on their love for Lord of the Rings adds a lot of laughs. Not a bad movie, just

Exactly the kind of movie I don't normally like. It's a wonderful life in Highschool. Plot is generic; every iota of the film can be predicted from the first minute. That being said, I found myself laughing though the entire film, despite the overwhelming desire not to do so. By no means a winner for everyone, it succeeds in being one of the best of "this kind" of movie.

I was actually surprised I liked the movie as much as I did. A friend of mine went into it thinking we'd just be drooling over Zac Efron for the hour and a half it ran, but we actually found ourselves genuinely chuckling at some parts. The cast is good, even Efron, and there's real effort and heart behind this one. Still, it does feel clichéd and is terribly predictable. Efron shows promise as an actor, if he can ever live down HSM he could be a really great star some day. I did find it hard to believe he'd look like Mathew Perry as an adult, though, as the differences in their appearance and movements are jarring. I wouldn't even believe they were related, let alone the same person.

The best parts of the film are when the main character is talking to his children, when they don't know he's their dad. Those scenes are genuinely moving, and it really makes you think about how a message, delivered by caring peers, is so much more effective sometimes than the same message delivered by a parent, especially when the peer can see things from the teen's point of view, which this parent can't, until he's 17 again. Could have been a lot worse than it was.

In "17 Again", Zac Efron does an impression of a young, handsome and popular Matthew Perry that somehow turns into the old, nerotic and angry Perry we're all used to. Apparently, being popular and handsome doesn't lead you to success in adult life. The opposite happens to Mike's geeky friend, Ned, who totally believes Mike has become young Mike. The message seems to be, that if you could do it over again, you'd make every choice correctly and get everything you'd ever want. Everyone here does.
