Weary midlife angst and marital estrangement, perhaps a little pretentious, self-serious and trendy in the way of 60s arthouse. Similar to but less profound than Rossellini's Journey to Italy, there's still a lot to be said for Dassin's master class direction. It's a beautiful film, strange and atmospheric and charged with eroticism, which takes fantastic advantage of its Spanish locale. The low light and amber tones are gorgeous.
