The ABCs of Death

Post by edkrak »

Short review is not enough so let's take a look at every short here:
A - 40 Nacho Vigalondo
One nice gore effect, but in general nothing interesting.
B - 50 Adrián García Bogliano
Ok, but nothing special.
C - 30 Ernesto Díaz Espinoza
Amateurish and you can do so much more with this kind of concept.
D - 25 Marcel Sarmiento
Man vs dog in slow motion.... waste of time.
E - 20 Angela Bettis
Amateurish, nothing interesting. Meh.
F - 80 Noboru Iguchi
Surreal comedy about farts. Hilarious if you like this kind of weird Japanese humor.
G - 10 Andrew Traucki
Somebody swims and then drowns... that's all. Huh?!
H - 75 Thomas Cappelen Malling
Now, that's quite fun.
I - 10 Jorge Michel Grau
I'm certainly not a fan of Grau's filmmaking. At least he should stop making anything horror related.
J - 65 Yudai Yamaguchi
Quite funny, but again it's weird Japanese humor.
K - 50 Anders Morgenthaler
Mediocre animated short. Not boring, but also nothing to get excited about.
L - 90 Timo Tjahjanto
This is fucked up, I love it. Exploitation at its best. A bit of "Srpski film" vibe, but better.
M - 10 Ti West
Worst short in this.
N - 70 Banjong Pisanthanakun
Nothing too memorable, but I found it quite funny.
O - 70 Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani
I liked it, but Forzani's & Cattet's gimmicks are really getting old. Are "experimental post-gialli" the only thing they can do?
P - 20 Simon Rumley
Ok, actually it's not that bad, but it's more like a drama rather than horror/exploitation and I just don't care a slightest bit about short dramas.
Q - 40 Adam Wingard
Director and producer are shooting film about themselves not knowing what to shoot. I don't like such bollocks.
R - 85 Srdjan Spasojevic
Alright, I liked it and I'm really curious about what Spasojevic will shoot next.
S - 70 Jake West
Fine. Jake West is not a great filmmaker and he'll never be one, but he can entertain.
T - 80 Lee Hardcastle
Gory claymation as usual from Hardcastle. This time it's about killer toilet - plenty of fun.
U - 70 Ben Wheatley
I usually hate POV films, but this is pretty well done.
V - 75 Kaare Andrews
Nice effects for a low budget short.
W - 70 Jon Schnepp
Similar concept to "Q", but this time at least it's fun.
X - 75 Xavier Gens
I like modern sick shit from France and this one also delivers.
Y - 85 Jason Eisener
Eisener's genuine love for B-movies is evident in everything he touches and this one's also a pleasure.
Z - 90 Yoshihiro Nishimura
I love Nishimura's twisted infantile mind and as usual when watching his films you" keep repeating "WHAT THE FUCK" every 10 seconds.

In general:
It started quite bad, I was worried it will be a huge waste of time, but it gets better and most good shorts are in the second half of the compilation. Most of well known names didn't dissapoint (except for Ti West who clearly pissed on the whole project). Out of the no name directors there's unfortunately not much promising talents, only Timo Tjahjanto managed to really impress me, I need to check his full feature debut. Average score = 56 (T4). Not very high, but I recommend to watch it. Horror/exploitation shorts are usually not that easy to find and here we have ~15 good ones. Don't be discouraged by shitty beginning and give it a chance.
