I found myself quite moved by the ending. I don't have a heart of stone. But the film's main problem lies in the fact that it feels more like a message than an actual story.

It's a subtle but sharp indictment of how a society oppresses half its population while telling them they're "separate but equal" - as long as they take care to police themselves to *keep* themselves separate, that is. "You can do anything if you put your mind to it," but it doesn't matter, since it will be taken from you anyway. At the same time, it's really a quite effective and dare I say cute drama about a young girl who just wants a bike. Not perfect, but very promising.

Even leaving aside the fascinating, inspiring circumstances surrounding its production (the first film directed by a Saudi Arabian woman, the first full-length feature shot entirely in Saudi Arabia), this is a film I highly recommend: charming, funny, inspiring and warm. It's slow-moving, but it's still easy to get caught up in the story. Reminds me of a lighter-hearted Dardennes work, for some reason.

Its pretty much amateur-hour but the setting is something completely different and combined with the great, but unoriginal, storyline Wadjda is a charming film.

Bolstered by Mohammed's wonderful performance as the title character, sharp insights into Soudi Arabia's social structures and the overall naturalistic feel, "Wadjda" may not pack the emotional punch of, say, "Jodaeiye Nader az Simin", but it remains compelling and intriguing. The story is, of course, simplistic and surprisingly mild in terms of emotional weight, but, nevertheless, the affable characters and their interactions make the film worth it.

BlurayRip no MakingOff.

Touching (although slight) story about a young girl navigating an outmoded patriarchal culture in a changing world

It's encouraging that a film like this could me made by a female filmmaker, in Saudi but, truth be told, it's pretty generic, and derivative of various other mostly Iranian films on a similar topic. There is some charm, and the ending hits home,

On the surface, this is a sweet movie about a girl who wants a bike. Digging a little deeper, there's subtle criticism about how culture plays a major role in making decisions for us, and whether we should accept that or not.

Final tahmin edilebilse bile, unutulmaz diyalo

If the drama of this small, simple film is quite restrained, without any extreme highs or lows, its message is certainly clear and very important both inside and outside the context of the story. For me the highlight is when Wadjda recites her verses at the competition and the juxtaposition of her passionate, rebellious nature and the strict religious code forced on her takes centre stage as the camera lingers on her face. For all fans of feminism, freedom, and just good acting and storytelling.

Everyday she huslin', makin' paper 'n' spittin' rhymes. The location's exotic but the points are for the brief moments of anger and hope that show through.

A rare film that forces you to consider not just what's going on in the movie, but also what's going on behind the scenes. What you see depicted isn't just a plot, it's reality for the very people showing it to us, not to mention for the other millions of people who live in this terrible country. I'm really amazed this thing ever got made, but I'm oh so glad it did. It's more than a movie, it's a rare bit of insight into a bizarre, backwards, fascinating culture.

A rare insight into Muslim, specifically Saudi Arabian, culture. That was welcome. In the end though, I think it was a bit to light and fluffy, "slice of life"-like for me to recommend.

The story is interesting and Waad Mohammed provides a captivating performance in the titular role. However, "Wadjda" is not as emotionally powerful as it could have been and the resolution is presented in a decidedly Hollywoodian manner.
