So awesome. The cast is incredible, the story is amazing and the writing/directing is great. Works as a noir, a western and a black comedy. The scene with Billy Bob is one of the funniest things I've seen. Jarmusch's best.

An original. As poetic as you could find with exceeding depth and a rolling dose of shady characters who make steady appearances throughout the duration. The score is particularly unbelievable and unexpected. It's lingering sound comes in and out of scenes with a playful and sometimes violent nature. Depp delivers another gold performance during the prime of his career in a film still largely unknown to most. Highly recommended. Great lasting quality and a personal favorite.

The lesson here is: don't show up late for a job interview because your life might turn into an unstoppable maelstrom of death. Check. It's moody and dreamlike and gets under the skin sometimes, but it's also rather aimless and the soundtrack gets grating. Seeing Lance Henriksen play a cannibalistic bounty hunter psycho brought up some existential questions like 'Why isn't Lance Henriksen playing a cannibalistic bounty hunter psycho in every movie ever?'

Some of the philosophy is straight from the stoner handbook, and there are a few clumsily staged moments, but Dead Man is easily Jarmusch's best work. It features an impressive ensemble cast, and Young's score rings with brittle discordance, evoking both Blake's troubled mindset and the desolate yet beautiful landscape which surrounds him, captured brilliantly by Muller in stark B+W. Their vision of the old West is undeniably original and has a scope that is lacking from contemporary westerns.

A less talented version of William Blake from Lake Erie comes to the eeriest place in the world to find himself in a series of events that can turn a docile accountant into a cold-blooded killer. Dead Man is an experience which is more like looking around a movie than watching it; just as the main character does. The soundtrack is the heart of the movie; I didn't know that Neil Young had it in him, this masterpiece.

An innocent man's decent through hell and back. This is one of my favorite Depp performances. I liked that Jarmusch decided to film this in b&w. It gives it more of a realistic portrayal of the time period and the soundtrack was nicely done as well. Just an electric played by Neil Young plugged into a simple amp with some distortion. Nothing fancy. It fit the mood perfectly. Cinematograohy and directing were A plus.

Gorgeous and wonderfully strange B&W western made with Jim Jarmusch's signature atmosphere, pacing, and use of moody music (this time riffed by Neil Young). The strongest aspect Dead Man has going for it is the colorful cast of supporting characters. Lance Henriksen, John Hurt, Gary Farmer, Michael Wincott, Gabriel Byrne, Iggy Pop, Jared Harris, Robert Mitchum, Alfred Molina, and Billy Bob Thornton all take turns stealing scenes while Johnny Depp's lead character seems bland in comparison.

the comparison to mccabe and mrs miller make sense here, as both are heavily stylised westerns that diverge significantly from standard myth. but while mccabe firmly deconstructs those tropes, dead man celebrates them, taking us on the metaphysical journey of a stoner in fancy dress-up. in a sense it's a send-off of the western genre, without much beyond its sense of 'cool' and its lavish costumes. which are pretty, by the way, and it's entertaining. but pretty stupid. the music is awful.

Bizarre, beautiful and brilliant. It's like a Cormac McCarthy western filtered through the sensibilities of Eraserhead and The Night of the Hunter (right down to Robert Mitchum's cameo and that artificial sky full of stars), but it's not just a mish-mash of influences; Jarmusch has a distinct sensibility of his own, most notably his pitch-black sense of humor. And the supporting cast is absolutely full of wonderful character parts.

Like a vivid dream, this is an experience that is memorable and strange, but also incomprehensible and ultimately meaningless. Scenes can be captivating and surreal; they just don't fit together to form a strong narrative. Neil Young's guitarwork sounds like the kind of music that was meant to be used sparingly and with subtlety; instead it's so loud and jarring that at the end you feel as if you've been tied to the front of an amplifier for the last two hours. Flawed, but interesting.

I didn't really have any expectations, and still they were subverted. One the one hand this was such a moodpiece and I really vibed with it (especially Neil Young's soundtrack, which sounds completely like proto-Earth and I love it). But on the other hand this was such a weird experience that I never quite felt on one wavelength with the movie, as it kept on changing and surprising me. It's already growing on me, and it might keep it up in the future.

The Jarmusch wit applied to the cowboy genre. The veil of ironic detachment from his previous films is used here to heighten the reality of the setting. Possibly Robby Muller's career best cinematography and Neil Young's guitars blaring the whole time. Doesn't get much better than that.

Although the movie has so much potential, the slow pacing and meandering plot make it too much of an 'effort' to sit through the entire 2 hours. Still it's worth a watch because of the strange setup and dreamlike storytelling, combined with excellent B&W photography. A lot of good things have been said about the soundtrack, so I'll just be a dick and say it's kind of repetitive.

Tripped out black and white Western starring Johnny Depp as a hapless accountant from Cleveland who ends up on a bizarre vision quest with an Indian after being shot in the chest. Very far out there film that moves extremely slowly and may test the patience of a lot of viewers, but it's a unique and rewarding experience. Lots of black humor and novelty cameo appearances, plus the soundtrack by Neil Young is fantastic and adds to the psychedelic flavor.

This movie has 3 things that make it brilliant, Jim Jarmush, Johnny Depp and Neil Young. The jamming nature of Young's guitarwork accompany Depp's inevitable journey to the beyond with stark veracity. Sharp notes that cut into his dying pains, he stumbles onward through the beautiful black and white scenery bereft of hope, yet led by an Indian to a spiritual catharsis. A beautiful film.

This isn't so bad, not as bad as the Limits of Control at least, but I still can't stand Jarmusch's style. Even with the good cast (not Depp, rather Mitchum and Hurt) and and the bleak cinematography, the pacing is way the fuck off, the dialogue is atrocious and the score is almost unbearable.

Only two things bothered me about this movie. First, Neil Young's score involved minimal effort. It was really good at first, but became repetitive, and sounded like any random guitarist noodling around while trying out some new effects pedals. Second, the assorted cameos seemed gratuitous. Other than that, I was surprised that I liked this movie as much as I did. A nice blend of funny and moody. Perhaps a bit too self-conscious in its status as a post-modern western, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Noir western that serves the rules of the genre (most importantly, the hero being a badass) while employing them for a meditation on death, modernity, and probably a number of other things going through the filmmaker’s head, thus making for perfectly consumable arthouse. I think it’s safe to say Johnny Depp went on to star in much worse films.

Even though I'm not a fan of Jim Jarmusch, here in Dead Man, he manages to offer a unique exploration of the "Dead Man"'s journey to spiritual aliveness. The relationship between the two characters, one outsider and one part of that nature is quite sincere and engaging in a sense. So, it is actually following their journey, following their stories of being followed, and being able to see a little bit of the destructive founding of America in the process. This film met my expectations.

A fantastic vibe is spread through 'Dead Man', amplified by its mesmerizing soundtrack featuring Neil Young's electric guitar. Present in every transition, it doesn't diminish the trance-like state; instead, it guides the journey towards a captivating finale. Really loved the B&W and the things those colors bring up, like when Blake and Nobody are riding their horses through a birch forest and everything gets contrasted and it just looks so damn nice. When I was watching this I thought it was pretty good, but writing this about five or six days after, I can't say I remember a whole lot about it, and when I've forgotten most of a movie that quickly it's usually not a great sign. It has a fun cast with people like John Hurt, Lance Henriksen, and Robert Mitchum (in one of his final roles) joining Depp and Farmer. Unusual but apparently forgettable. Poetic, abstract take on the American western is best appreciated as a collage of sights and sounds that you might find in a traditional "John Wayne" western, though spiced up and askew (pretty sure fellatio was never spotted in a Wayne oater!) Cast to perfection, with Jarmusch exploiting the essential essences of his cast - especially Henriksen, Mitchum and Glover. Thanks to its dry, irreverent humor, offbeat characters, and enigmatic nature, the film is fascinating to watch -- quite an accomplishment for Jarmusch.
